Scotland - Fife to Edinburgh

The Forth & Clyde and Union Canals were linked by a staircase of 11 locks which took nearly a day to transit. This was uneconomical so these were dismantled in 1933. It took until 1998 for construction to start to rejoin the canals and build the Falkirk wheel. It was opened in 2002. This is a view of the Falkirk Wheel from the top.
